MTG stands for *Magic: The Gathering*, a collectible card game. The Banned and Restricted Announcement is a periodic official update from its publisher, Wizards of the Coast, that dictates which cards can no longer be legally played (Banned) or are limited in number (Restricted) in various competitive formats to maintain game balance and health.
The spike was caused by the release of a significant Banned and Restricted update on November 10, 2025, which affected six different MTG formats. The most impactful changes were in the Standard format, with the banning of dominant cards like Vivi Ornitier, Screaming Nemesis, and Proft's Eidetic Memory, which together formed the widely disliked 'Izzet Cauldron' archetype. Legacy and Pauper formats also saw major changes with cards like Entomb and High Tide being banned.
The MTG community was highly focused on the announcement, with a general consensus that the bans were necessary and long-awaited, particularly in the Standard format. Players expressed relief that the dominant 'Vivi Cauldron' deck, which was criticized for having an 'unacceptably high win and play rate,' was broken up, opening the metagame for new archetypes.
