A non-reversing mirror (or 'true mirror') is a device, usually made of two mirrors placed at a precise 90-degree angle, or a mobile app that achieves the same effect. It shows the user a non-reversed image of themselves—the dynamic image that other people see—unlike a standard mirror, which shows a laterally reversed reflection.
The search spiked due to viral content on social media (such as TikTok) showcasing the psychological effect of seeing one's non-reversed image for the first time. The shock of recognizing facial asymmetries often causes a spike in curiosity and a comparison to the familiar (but technically inaccurate) reversed image they are used to seeing.
The public is largely polarized: many users initially experience shock or distress upon seeing their non-reversed image, which highlights their natural facial asymmetry. However, others find the experience to be 'liberating' and an important tool for improving self-perception and self-confidence by confronting how they truly appear to the world.
