John Beam is the athletic director and former head football coach for the Laney College Eagles in Oakland, California. He gained national recognition after being profiled in the fifth season of the Netflix docuseries, "Last Chance U," which followed his team during the 2019 season.
Interest spiked after Beam was shot on the Laney College campus, near the field house, on November 13, 2025. Authorities characterized the incident as isolated, but his hospitalization and connection to the popular docuseries generated widespread public and media attention.
The public expressed widespread support and concern for Beam, with many city officials citing the event as a heartbreaking example of the ongoing gun violence crisis in Oakland that is 'robbing our community of safety.' Community members highlighted his 'immeasurable' positive impact on local sports and student-athletes.
