James Comey is the former Director of the FBI. Letitia James is the Attorney General of New York. The searches relate to a federal judge dismissing criminal indictments against both Comey and James. The indictments were secured by an interim U.S. Attorney, Lindsey Halligan, who was a former White House aide with no prior prosecutorial experience.
The spike was caused by U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie's dual rulings on November 24, 2025, dismissing the criminal cases against James Comey and Letitia James without prejudice. Judge Currie ruled that the prosecutor, Lindsey Halligan, was unlawfully appointed to the position of Interim U.S. Attorney, which invalidated all actions flowing from her 'defective appointment,' including the indictments. The dismissal is viewed as a significant setback to efforts to prosecute critics of the former administration.
The decision is widely viewed as a blow to the attempts to weaponize the criminal justice system against political opponents. While the dismissal was 'without prejudice' (meaning the charges can be refiled with a lawfully appointed prosecutor), the ruling validated the argument that the appointment of Lindsey Halligan was an unlawful exercise of executive power. James Comey expressed an expectation that he could face additional charges again.
