A ferocious blaze in a high-rise residential complex in the Tai Po neighborhood of Hong Kong has resulted in at least 44 confirmed deaths and 279 people missing, making it one of the city's deadliest fires in decades. The complex, which had been undergoing renovation, consists of eight 32-storey towers.
The search spiked due to the massive scale and high casualty count of the fire, which started on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. The rapid spread of the blaze, which affected seven residential blocks, was likely aided by the bamboo scaffolding and green construction mesh surrounding the buildings.
Authorities launched criminal investigations into the cause, with three men arrested on suspicion of manslaughter due to gross negligence. The use of bamboo scaffolding, which is being phased out for safety, has become a focus of the investigation and public scrutiny as a potential factor in the fire's spread.
